چکیده

A study has been conducted over an agro-pastoral area in Niger, characterised by large land use heterogeneity, using low resolution Wind Scatterometer (WSC) data. 9-year WSC data time series are analysed over the study site with the help of a backscattering model. 8 ERS Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images were also analysed in order to quantify the different land use contributions to the WSC radar response. Simulations results show that the contribution of vegetation remains low. These results are quite different from those obtained over Sahelian pastoral areas in Mali, where vegetation contribution cannot be neglected.

Wind field retrieval from SAR compared with scatterometer wind field during ERS Tandem phase

Several recent works [such as Vachon et al. 1996, Scoon et al. 1996 and Korsbakken et al. 1997] report promising results when wind retrieval models developed for the wind scatterometer (WSC) are applied to SAR data. The general conclusion from these works is that more validation is needed since the available in-situ material is relatively limited. A dataset from the ERS-1/2 Tandem phase allows ...

Global wind speed retrieval from SAR

The global availability of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) wave mode data from the European Remote Sensing (ERS) satellites ERS-1 and ERS-2, as well as ENVISAT, allows for the investigation of the wind field over the ocean on a global and continuous basis. For this purpose, 27 days of ERS-2 SAR wave mode data were processed, representing a total of 34 310 imagettes of size 10 km 5 km, available ...

The ERS Scatterometer instrument and the On-Ground processing of its Data

More recently it has been found that scatterometer data are also very valuable for land, snow and ice applications. Parameters like surface moisture, sea ice concentrations, sea ice age and snow conditions could be successfully retrieved using scatterometer data. Particularly promising is the derivation of sea ice masks based on the polarization ratios of the scatterometer data (for NSCAT) and ...

Assimilation of Typhoon Wind Field Retrieved from Scatterometer and SAR Based on the Huber Norm Quality Control

Observations of sea surface wind field are critical for typhoon prediction. The scatterometer observation is one of the most important sources of sea surface winds, which provides both wind speed and wind direction information. However, the spatial resolution of scatterometer wind is low. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) can provide a more detailed wind structure of the tropical cyclone. In addit...

Wind retrieval from RADARSAT SAR images: Selection of a suitable C-band HH polarization wind retrieval model

A standardized analysis of wind retrieval collocations from a set of ERS (C-band VV polarization) and RADARSAT (C-band HH polarization) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) open ocean images is presented. The field validation opportunities, carried out over the past eight years, provided collocated (in time and space) in situ validation data consisting of wind vector and ocean wave spectrum measureme...
